Shark Animal Energy

Shark has a natural power and authority in the environment in which it is comfortable. Shark reminds us that it is important to show that we have power, and that we can fight for what we want, and not back down. It is not a showy or arrogant power fuelled with insecurity, it is a steely and resolved power.
The shark implies protection in all worlds. As a guide, this creature lends it’s strength and ability to negotiate all otherworldly paths to us.
It is important to realise that we have a dark side; it might be our shadow self, or our subconscious, or whatever term fits your worldview, but there is a part of ourselves which is predatorial even though we may seek to deny it. It is there, and part of our struggle is to integrate and assimilate what might seem ruthless and bloodthirsty. Shark helps us to understand and embrace our predatorial subconscious.
Shark as a guide, reminds us that sometimes change is not good or appropriate, and that we must be resistant to change in order to preserve something about our lifestyle that is inherently ours. Sometimes this might come in the form of resisting the changes that others impose upon us, so that we might make the changes in our life that are right for us. Other times it might come in the form of resisting an environmental change, or a lifestyle change, that threatens to compromise our safety and internal growth. Shark comes into our life to tell us that change for the sake of change is useless, especially when you are already onto a good thing in your lifestyle.
Shark is the peaceable predator, it is a fierce hunter who is easily able to cruise gently and quietly with its prey. Shark understands the oceans, and the way inter-relationships work, and is not too hostile, nor too inviting. Shark teaches us that it is possible to be innately predatorial and seek what we want, without alienating our friends, family and the energies in our environment. This is a very important lesson for many, but also a difficult one, which may be why many people are frightened of shark or resent its energy.

People with the shark totem navigate through life with a specialized “gut-rudder.” What’s a gut-rudder? That’s what I call a primal instinct. It’s a visceral, hard-wired knowing that guides certain humans. It’s infallible, reliable, and geared for one thing only: To protect the sacred. And what is sacred? Life.
The shark is both oracle and embodiment of fundamental life. The shark relays root-chakra energy to me because of its superior instinct, and that remarkable drive for survival. That’s a prime root chakra concept : Ancient Instinct. Primal Knowing.

Excerpt –
It is very likely you are extremely driven and perpetually moving forward. You meet life full-on and prefer to experience everything with undeniable exuberance. You are usually in a constant state of renewal and often find a career that is fast moving, includes lots of travel and is highly predatory. You love challenges and actively seek them out. You have a unique vision of the world and virtually no concept of death. You are fearless in your choices and are often remorseless in the pursuit of your goals.
From – Shamanic Journey: Shark
Sharks medicine includes the hunter, survival, adaptability, Independence, Potential, Adaptation, fearlessness, protection, power, emotional transformation, balance, clairaudience.
Unfortunately, sharks have a bad reputation as being dangerous, fearless and unpredictable. They can ignite a feeling of fear and terror in many people. (I personally have always felt afraid of sharks for some reason!) A full up and single shark is generally pretty peaceful, but in large groups they can be unpredictable and may frenzy.
To those with shark medicine, protection is offered. During our individual lifetimes, we can attract events and people we clash with. If there is a situation in your life that you need to ‘scare away’, call upon shark for help. You will be give by shark the power and confidence to fend off negative elements or get rid of them completely.
Sharks have an extremely acute sense of smell and are able to smell one drop of blood in 50 million times as much water. Having no swim bladder means they can never stop swimming or they would simply sink to the bottom of the ocean. They feel the pressure waves made by a fish in trouble and are sensitive to electromagnetic currents. Those with this power animal are taught how to cultivate their own sensory abilities. Studying aromatherapy would be beneficial to those with this medicine.
The shark connects us with the creative element of life – water. Through the ages water has always been linked with emotional transformation. They reveal to us the strength of the currents of our lives and see clearly in the murky waters of the future. Observing the sharks swimming patterns teaches us how to get out of our emotional conflicts efficiently. All fish in general can teach us to adapt to all environments and streamline our lives. A fish swimming down symbolizes the involution of spirit, whilst a fish swimming up is the evolution of the spirit.
A shark in captivity can be trained to do simple tasks such as telling apart certain objects from others in the water, and can recognise the ringing of a bell for a meal. Shark people need time to themselves to remain calm, balanced and centred, or they can turn irritable, anxious and aggressive in demeanour. Meditating, tai chi, yoga and martiual arts for example bring peaxe and balnce of mind. Im not a shark person, but personally i love meditating and also kick boxing.
When shark swims into your life, this often signifies that one of the senses will be awakened – visions, prophetic dreams, or clairaudience is possible. There will be a greater connection with the spiritual realm.
For shark people, staying busy and active is very beneficial. Work-alcoholics often have Shark as a power animal. Those with shark also are often able to accomplish seemingly impossible tasks. They also often have an acute sense of smell – trust what ‘smells’ right.

More on Shark:
It is somewhat astonishing that the old Hawaiians gave the same name to both the tiger shark and white shark: “Niuhi”. Many shark species found in Hawaiian waters were honored as being sacred and were even considered reincarnations of dead family members. The “Niuhi” were, however, more feared than adored. Still, both species played a role in local mythology. Legends suggest that many kings living in the historical Hawaiian environment acquired their premonition of future events by consuming the eyes of the “Niuhi”. It is said that even the mother of the most famous king of Hawaii, King Kamehameha (born around 1753 and having died on May 8, 1819) asked for “Niuhi” eyes during her pregnancy because they supposedly would enhance the leadership qualities of the future king she was carrying. Tiger sharks were always considered a very special shark species not only in the Pacific but also in the Maldives, where they were called “Femunu”. (http://www.sharkinfo.ch Dr. Erich K. Ritter)
A shark following a ship is a death omen for one of the passengers.
Nail a sharks tail to the bow of a ship and you will ward off sharks.
The Kuna people live on the San Blas Islands off the northern coast of Panama. They call their territory “Kuna Yala,” the land of the Kuna. Their magnificent textiles called molas tell stories of guardian shark spirits who protect fishermen, and dangerous shark spirits who inspire fear and respect. The molas are hand sewn in a reverse appliqué technique using several layers of differently colored cotton. (I have a really neat pic of one of these embroidered hammerhead sharks.)
One Kuna legend tells the story of Uncle Shark—a sacred, but evil, spirit who can cause great harm as he travels the sea in his silver boat. Calling him “Uncle” reminds the Kuna people of their belief in the close connection between the natural and spiritual worlds.
Stone carvings of mythical sharks adorn ancient Maya temples and other ruins. In Mayan mythology, the xoc (pronounced shoke) was a terrible shark-monster that haunted the coasts and even swam into rivers.
The word “shark” likely entered the English language after a British pirate spoke of man-eating demon fish off the Yucatan coast, creatures which had devoured most of his crew after their fleet was attacked by Spanish forces. The local Mayan Indians called these monsters “xoc.”
(Monterey Bay Aquariam website)Ampullae of Lorenzini – These small pits in the head detect electricity. The shark has the greatest electricity sensitivity known in all animals. This sense is used to find prey hidden in sand in bottom feeding sharks, by detecting the nerve impulses. It is this sense that sometimes confuses a shark into attacking a boat, when the metal interacts with the salt water.
Sharks generally reach sexual maturity slowly and produce very few offspring in comparison to other fishes that are harvested. This has caused concern among biologists regarding the increase in effort applied to catching sharks over time, and many species are considered to be threatened.
Sharks figure prominently in the Hawaiian mythology…They could change form between shark and human at any time desired, and for any length. A common theme in the stories was that the shark men would warn beach goers that sharks were in the waters. The beach goers would laugh and ignore the warnings and go swimming, subsequently being eaten by the same shark man who warned them not to enter the water.Hawaiian mythology also contained many shark gods. They believed that sharks were guardians of the sea, and called them Aumakua. In other Pacific Ocean cultures, Dakuwanga was a shark god who was the eater of lost souls. In ancient Greece, shark flesh was forbidden to be eaten at women’s festivals.
In Greek mythology, Cerberus saved Delia from the stomach of a shark, fell in love with her and became her protector.

Owl Medicine – Part one
Owl sees and knows the truth. It’s ability to navigate through the darkest night and bring back nourishment for itself and others is the foundation of this essence. When you have lost your way, owl essence will guide you back to your proper path and wisdom.
Expanded Definition – Death and rebirth, releasing that which has outlived it’s benefit and usefulness in your life, actual physical death transition, can be placed in a bowl of water and used to help earth bound Souls find their guides and loved ones. Clearing a home or land of negative energy. Starting over in a new life or releasing the ties that kept you bound to the old one. Enhances clairvoyance, clairaudience, communication from one’s Master Guides and Totems.
Owls have long been associated with both death and wisdom. In Greek mythology an Owl was sacred to Pallas Athene, the Goddess of wisdom, because it sat on her shoulder and lit up her blind side. Their association with death comes from their peerless ability as hunters of the night, they are able to navigate through the most densely forested areas in order to seek out and capture their prey. Crows will mob Owls when they are near their territory for they know that when night falls, Owl becomes a formidable predator that will return to the Crow’s nesting areas in search of a tasty Crow dinner.
Yet even so, the Owl provides a vital function in keeping bird, rodent and insect populations in check; too many of any species is detrimental to the balance of all. So it is with other things in our own lives, for if we have too many possessions, too many projects, too much of anything, it limits and restricts our ability to move freely through the different areas of our lives and the resu lt is stagnation which leads to the death of joy, happiness and abundance. Owl medicine then becomes crucial in helping us to clear out that which is no longer needed or wanted. What may seem like a death to us in the giving up of something may be for another the birth and manifestation of a dream. We are most likely to lose our way when we become enmeshed in the “shoulds” and “must haves” in life, most of which come not from our inner selves but from the opinions and beliefs of those around us. We can spend so much time listening to others about what we should want ( and the commercials on the telly and radio are prime examples of this!) that we ignore what we really want. We find ourselves spiraling downwards into the darkness because we have become so busy thinking we must pursue this or hunt that, most of which provides very little, if any, real nourishment.
Think for a moment what your life would be like if you were able to jettison anything that did not speak to you on a Soul level. What would remain? What then would you “hunt” because it provided for you on all levels? That is what Owl medicine teaches us to do. We find that as we begin to move through the process of what we truly want, clearing the old to make way for the new birth of the Self that is close at hand, we find that other obstacles, limitations, fears and anxieties also begin to “die” in our lives. They no longer have the hooks to remain attached to our energy fields and without our support, they must die.
Owl knows that all apparent manner of death is in fact a liberation into a new life. Something must first be cleared away for anything new to be born. When a person moves, leaves a job or relationship, has a baby, adopts a new animal friend, something in the old way of life had to die for the new to be created. At the time it may seem incredibly painful because we have been taught that death is an ending, not a new beginning, and that what is in the process of being born is always more beneficial than the old. The pain and grief is extended and heightened when we try to hang on to what was because we believe that is the best we would ever have. The unknown can seem dreadfully forbidding, how will we cope, who will be there if we stumble, what if we fail?
Owl can take us beyond those thoughts and fears, for Owl sees far into the future and knows that even after the darkest night there is a new dawn that is approaching. It is as inevitable as babies crying and of buds bursting forth from plants in the spring. From every death something new must emerge for life is ever renewing itself. The Crow that was taken by an Owl last summer may reappear the following spring as a nestling. The Berries that were eaten by a Bear one year may reappear the next as a bird, an ant or a human being. All of life is interconnected and we are all part and parcel of the same fabric that wends its way through the stories of our own life and death. Death then becomes not a loss but a new adventure to be explored with great abandon and joy.

Other Supportive Measures – Write a letter to a loved one who has passed over or light a candle for them for 7 consecutive days. Look back at some of the “deaths” in your life, how have they helped you to become the person you are today? Join a discussion or support group for death and dying, study the planet Pluto in your natal chart and note what deaths have occurred through the house where it is found and also the house where Scorpio is found on the cusp or contained within it. Hold a releasing ceremony, symbolically burying or burning anything you no longer want or need in your own life. Make up your own ritual for this and follow your own inner knowing or call upon Owl to help show you the way.Owl Medicine – Part Two
Owl medicine can help a person to extract secrets, to see that which is hidden in the darkness and is very powerful for soul retreivals for this reason. Many shamans, psychic healers and mediums have owl medicine either as a primary totem or can call upon one as needed. They can see clear through to the core reason for any type of imbalance and then they can spot the proper medicine needed to heal the imbalance.
Owls are also fabulous at keeping rodent populations under control. In Eastern Oregon for example farmers have begun encouraging Barn Owls to nest on their property because of their ability to out do the family cat in keeping rodents under control! So Owl medicine can also help us to keep the pests in our own lives at bay and keep them from becoming overly destructive. In healing this medicine can become very important as in cases of Cancer where they “pest” in this case the cancer cells, are multiplying so rapidly they threaten to destroy the fabric of the body physical. In actual fact, the body contains numerous cells and virus’s and bacteria’s that if not kept under control would kill us within days and yet in the proper numbers are actually highly beneficial to the body!
So too are rodent populations needed in order to maintain balance in the world. Owl knows what is needed in the proper amounts and what needs to be released, the way in which the Owl Medicine person does this though depends on the relationship they have with their own Owls and what the Owl suggests to them as the proper balancing measure.
Owl people also need to get a certain amount of daytime/solar energy via the sun, yellow crystals or flowers and so forth lest they become out of balance with the nocturnal side of their nature. It can be easy for Owl people to want to shun the daylight as they tend to be more comfortable at night, and yet they too need the balance that the solar world provides. They might feel overly exposed when out in the daylight and thus it helps them to wear a talisman or shield of some sort where they feel they are protected from the energies of others as often they are extremely sensitive and psychic.
If you need to know the truth of something, ask an Owl person or one who has Lynx or Bobcat medicine! All three tend to see what others do not or cannot and are very reliable and accurate in what they pick up about a person or situation. The Owl person, though, is far more likely to tell you what they see, the Lynx and Bobcat person usually keeps many things to themselves.
Other raptors such as Hawks, Eagles and so forth are associated with Owls as well because they frequently share the same territory although there is the odd skirmish now and again. Owl people frequently find that they may have to stand their ground in life when they find themselves challenged by someone else, yet if they are coming from what they know is true, that always does come to the forefront in the end! Owl people also do tend to be very wise, often beyond their years because they do see far more than many others do. They tend to be mystical, rather magical people and often are highly interested in magic and ritual at which they are extremely gifted! Merlin had an Owl for example, this is why he was such a wonderful Magician, VBG!

Crows and Ravens carry very similar medicine. What applies to Crow applies to Raven as well. Ravens must be understood more at an intuitive level however for they are the gatekeepers to the void of Spirit where there is no form or structure, but fluidity and constant change. So when someone speaks of Raven medicine, it is more easily understood through the intuitive senses and emotions.
It is also more easily to describe Raven medicine as it is expressed through those who carry it. And in fact, when I first began writing this I was told that this was what was needed at this time. It is said that people who carry Raven medicine also carry a heavy responsibility to Spirit. It as if these people have come into this Earth walk in order to help others break through old paradigms and belief systems into a new, more expanded awareness of reality.
Ravens are Heyokas, tricksters, in Native American mythology they taught the people both the right way to live through example of what not to do as well as bringing many blessings. When I was a child I was told _ when you see a Raven say – None of your tricks today brother/sister Raven! Only fruit_. What was meant by this was asking Raven to bring abundance and blessings rather than turning your reality on its head and having to learn things the hard way. Seeing a Raven carrying food in it’s mouth was considered to be a good omen in my family as it meant that Spirit was sending the message that all would be provided for. Even today when I see the Crows with food in their mouths I have found this also applies to them.
It was Raven who stole the sun from a monster who wanted to keep the world in darkness. Thus Raven people have a duty to confront their own monsters and demons in order to bring greater light into themselves. Once they are well on that path, they find themselves being asked to turn time and again to those who are in need of their assistance and have in fact at some level called out to Raven for support and protection. Those who carry Raven medicine often feel that their lives are not their own but belong to a greater cause or higher plan, and though they may not understand fully where they are being led, they know they have a special destiny to fulfill. Sometimes this destiny fills them with a sense of loneliness, even sadness, for like those with Wolf as a totem, these people know they walk alone. It is not that Raven keeps us from those of like mind, nor does it mean they do not have family or friends, rather it is from a sense of knowing that one is to be a rebel, a trickster, the joker in the deck, to go forth and do that which others would call crazy or foolish so that the earth and all who inhabit her can continue to expand and evolve. And to do that no matter the consequences.
Raven is also about shapeshifting and mysticism. A shapeshifter is one that knows that this Earth walk is an illusion and that one, if one believes it, can travel through space and time in the blink of an eye to appear in any form that is appropriate to bring help and healing to another. Many who carry Raven medicine often appear younger than their years, another ability of shapeshifting. Raven medicine is both very Neptunian in that it feels very intensely what others are truly thinking and feeling, and Plutonian as it sees that which most would prefer to ignore. Both are crucial for learning how to shapeshift either the self or reality, for shapeshifting is the awareness of other levels of reality besides this one. For if a person refuses to see what is how can he or she change anything? Raven teaches us how to look at what we are experiencing in a whole new way and thus adapt to what is while working towards a more positive future. Ravens are clairvoyant, they carry messages from Spirit to those who are willing to hear and follow through on what they are shown. That is why so many Raven people feel isolated and alone, they know at any moment Spirit may call upon them to leave everything behind in order to work for the good of the whole. This is why when a Raven person makes a friend, they are loyal for life as they understand the true value of friendship and want to honour and enjoy every moment they have with those they love.
Those who carry Raven medicine often have powerful, life altering visions at key points in their lives. Ravens are said to be fond of crossroads as that is where their energy can be utilized by those who are seeking a new direction for their lives. When facing a new path it is often wise to call upon Raven medicine to show you if that is the true and correct path for you or not. This is not to say that the right path will always be easy, for Ravens in their role of guardian and protector of all they survey are often called upon to help set something right or bring it back into balance. Ravens also teach us how to journey into the void where all possibility lives. If you look into the eye of a Raven it is the gateway between this world and the next, the place where all of our hopes and dreams live. Raven knows how to carry us there and shows us the proper path to return so that we may manifest that which we have found in the void. Moving into the void and returning to one’s reality also brings more awareness of how to deal with the shadows in one’s and others lives. Raven people are powerful navigators of the darkness, for their intuitive sense is so strong that they learn to rely on it rather than what is just before their physical eyes. Ravens are very alert. They are constantly on patrol, watching over their territory lest Owl move in and hunt them in the night time. Thus Raven medicine can also teach us, like Crow, how to defend and protect that which we value and cherish. We can call upon Raven medicine to insure that no predators make a tasty meal out of something we have worked hard to create. When there is an intuitive sense that something is not quite right it is important for those who carry this medicine be especially aware and alert when they get the proverbial red flag. Even thought the Raven person may not understand why they are picking up what they do, nine times out of ten they are spot on and so need to honour their insights intuitive awareness.
Raven says _ I watched Spirit create the entire Universe out of the void, it’s very being. Thus was I taught by Spirit how to create magic. Raven people learn early on that what they focus on becomes their intent for their life experiences. Raven knows that Spirit created everything by setting an intention to do so and then spoke the word that it was done. Spirit taught Raven how to speak many languages so that Raven could teach humans how to both create magic and understand the different levels of reality and beings that inhabit them as well as understanding each other and all other beings who share our home. In magic, intention is everything, in creating or shapeshifting reality intention is everything. Then one must only speak the words “it is done” for it to be brought forth out of the void. What is desired is simply awaiting our awareness of it.
There is something very mystical and otherworldly about Ravens and the people that carry their medicine that makes them both hard to define. They are fluid like Neptune yet all penetrating like Pluto and in fact many Raven people I have known have had both planets prominent in their charts.
In closing, there is a story about Raven that comes from the native peoples of British Columbia, Canada. It is said that Raven was flying along a beach and saw a Clam shell. Never having seen one before Raven became quite curious and wondered what was inside. Raven tried to break it open with his beak to no avail. Finally he carried it high aloft into the sky and dropped it onto a rock. The Clam shell broke open and humans emerged from it, representing all of the different races that we know today. Raven was so shocked, never having seen humans before, that before he knew what was happening, all the people had run away to where they are now. And I think that is why Raven was given such a heavy duty by Spirit, to watch over those that he set free. Perhaps this also helps to explain why Crows and Ravens are found the world over. They must tend to that which they helped bring into being. There is a good message here for us too, to be careful of what we create and bring into our lives as we are given responsibility over it by Spirit. It may appear to leave our lives at different times, yet it is still our creation and we must feed and nurture it as we can in order to fulfill our own individual destinies.
