A simplified view of how the brain works

Short-term memories sit in the hippocampus, at the front of the brain. The hippocampus can be thought of as the awareness which watches the thoughts that happen in the brain and responds to them, which creates other thoughts that describe that response. Long-term memories are stored on the right side of the brain. Your consciousness sits on the left side of the brain.

Whether you know it or not, your intellect, ability for creative thought and ability to remember long-term memories, all involve a negotiation within your mind.

The right hemisphere also holds your rejected, shadow aspects, and it is these that can cause the right hemisphere to behave incongruently, potentially refusing to find some memories, or giving you negative or distracting thoughts that take away your focus and ability to concentrate on complex problems.
